HONG Kong’s Tsz Fung Yip celebrated the biggest win of his career as he came from 2-0 down to defeat former world No 3 Omar Mosaad in the final of the 2018 Macau Open to claim the PSA M50 title – while Egyptian Nouran Gohar retained her 2017 title with victory over compatriot Salma Hani in the women’s final.

A cautious opening from both players saw Egypt’s Mosaad edge the crucial points to take the first and second games and assume a commanding position in the match but Yip powered through the third, profiting as Mosaad looked to tire, to get a footing in the match.

After levelling the match at 2-2, Yip continued to go from strength to strength as Mosaad continued to tire, with the man from Hong Kong prevailing to win the biggest title of his career to date.

“I am very happy to have won, especially as it’s a $50k event,” said Yip.

“But it was very tough in there, especially being 2-0 down. I am very glad I managed to come back – to win this is very special.

“I would like to thank all my coaches – my fitness coach Jamie, squash coaches Faheem and Chris. I also want to thank my girlfriend and all those who came to support me.”

In the women’s draw Gohar halted the run of Hani in an entertaining four-game match to successfully defend the title she won last year.

The first game started with both players enjoying spells of dominance before Gohar steamed ahead to take the lead and she quickly doubled up with a commanding second game.

Hani managed to take the third but Gohar rebounded in style to take the fourth comfortably and seal the title win.

“I didn’t have the best season last season, so hopefully winning this, it will help boost my performance this year,” said Gohar.

“We have the El-Gouna event next up which is big especially as it will be held back home, and then finish off with the British Open, so I hope this will help kick start me once again.”
