The Salama gallery’s “Art for All” summer collective show features a coterie of artists such as Georges Bahgory, Ihab Lotfy, Djehan Raouf, Essmat Dawestashy, Salah Taher and Seif and Adham Wanli

Born in 1943 in Alexandria, painter and sculptor Essmat Dawestashy is far from conventional. A dynamic activist, he is well known for his deep ideas and broad culture.

Dawestashy graduated from Alexandria University with a BA in sculpture in 1967. His work is always authentic, relying on ancient Egyptian and folk heritage for inspiration. Symbols and myths play the main part in his two-dimensional paintings as well as his works in three dimensions with the widest variety of found materials: wood, leather, metal and other used items all combine with folk motifs to create stunning installations.

He has spent most of his life in his beloved birthplace, Alexandria, exhibiting all over the world. Dawestashy’s is also an excellent critic with a rare talent for writing on art and an encyclopedic passion for documentation.

The exhibition continues through the end of the season.
