Fri 22-Sat 23, 7pm: “Room for Maneuvering”, public discussions; the first evening is dedicated to past and recent histories of film clubs in Syria, Tunisia and Egypt. Together with the guests, the panel will open a discussion about the social and political context of watching films in settings that point beyond a film being shown, where a screening becomes a space for discussion, knowledge exchange and making friends. The second panel will look at the situation of local filmmakers and film programmers, where and how moving image works become visible and accessible. It will discuss the dynamics and effects of encountering films from the region through specific European film festivals and try to open a discussion around the film development programmes that are run by funding institutions.
