One Classic and a few surprises

Al-Ahram Weekly

CRISTIANO Ronaldo produced one of the great World Cup performances as his dramatic late free-kick earned Portugal a 3-3 draw with Spain. Twice Portugal led, twice Spain equalised and then took the lead but with one minute to go, Ronaldo curled in a wonderful free-kick which soared into the top corner to complete a memorable hat-trick. It was the 51st hat trick in World Cup history and coincidentally, Ronaldo’s 51st hat-trick for club and country in his remarkable career

Iceland goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson, a part-time film director, played the lead role as he saves Lionel Messi’s penalty to earn a 1-1 draw against the two-time World Cup champions and runners-up in one of the biggest upsets of the first round. Making their first ever World Cup appearance, Iceland are the smallest country in the World Cup but they are certainly not the worst. Though he is a five-time world player of the year Messi needs a World Cup win to come out from the shadows of his illustrious countryman Diego Maradona but the tie was not the best of starts

Mexico’s players congratulate each other after Hirving Lozano scored against Germany in the first half in a 1-0 win, the biggest upset of the 2018 World Cup thus far. It was an absolute stunner against the defending champions who four years ago had pulverized Brazil 7-1 en route to their fourth World Cup. For Mexico, it was arguably their greatest World Cup victory ever as the Germans looked surprisingly disorganised for almost the entire first half.
