US FIRST Lady Melania Trump visited Egypt this week on the last stop of a four-country African tour. She was received at the airport by President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi’s wife Intissar before meeting with President Al-Sisi at the Ittihadiya Palace. She also visited the Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx.

Mrs Trump’s African tour, her first solo trip abroad since Donald Trump became US president, included Ghana, Malawi, Kenya and Egypt. The visit focused on children, and came within the context of Mrs Trump’s “Be Best” child welfare initiative launched in May.

“The mission of ‘Be Best’ is to focus on some of the major issues facing children today, with the goal of encouraging children to ‘Be Best’ in their individual paths, while also teaching them the importance of social, emotional and physical health. ‘Be Best’ will concentrate on three main pillars: well-being, social media use, and opioid abuse,” says the White House website.

During her meeting with President Al-Sisi, ways to enhance the role of women, protect children’s rights and empower young people were discussed alongside Egypt’s efforts to develop the health, education and tourism sectors.

Commentators hailed the visit as an effective promotion of Egypt as a tourist destination, with pictures of Melania Trump standing in front of the Pyramids and Sphinx beaming around the world.

President Trump hailed his wife’s tour as a success. “The first lady did a tremendous job representing our country in Africa — as no one has before,” he said in a statement issued on Sunday. “She got to know first-hand the people of Africa, and they loved and respected her everywhere she went.”
