Egypt is working to regain its status as a top cotton exporter. This year around 335,000 feddans (a feddan equals 1.01 acres) were cultivated with cotton, an increase of around 120,000 over last year. A couple of years ago, the Ministry of Agriculture started taking measures to support the domestic cotton sector and increase long-term productivity of the long-staple and medium-length cotton.

This has resulted in improved exports to reach 52,000 tonnes in last year’s season, a 37 per cent increase on the previous year. Egyptian long-staple cotton is used in the production of luxury linen.
