The Dark Forest

“The Dark Forest” is the latest collection of artworks by Marwa Adel, currently on display at Misr gallery in Zamalek.

This body of work explores the conflict between the individual and social constructions of identity.

“With the pressure to be socially accepted, we attempt to uphold a certain image to validate ourselves and to hide our truth. We allow falsely the power, privilege, representation and hybridization of the society to influence and determine the conceptions of our identity and who truly we are. We live in a dark forest of a completely constructed illusion,” Adel said.

Adel is an Egyptian visual artist based in Cairo, who works as a professor at the Faculty of Applied Arts, Helwan University, and holds a PhD in visual communication. Most of her work focuses on exploring the human body as the site of evolution and conflict in the light of identity, cultural and social taboos. It is the discovery and the revelation of the relationship between form and essence, spirit and materiality, image and ideas.

The exhibition will remain on view until 13 December.
