On 14 and 15 January Egyptians go to the polls to vote in a referendum on the country’s new constitution, which replaces the Islamist-drafted charter which gave religious interpretations a greater role in legislation and trampled on rights and freedoms. Against a backdrop of Muslim Brotherhood violence, voters are to simply say “yes” or “no” to the constitution which culminates the first major step of the roadmap as drawn up by the government after Mohamed Morsi was deposed as president last year. The plan also envisages parliamentary and presidential elections, both later this year, as part of an often times stormy political transition.
