President Adly Mansour

“Most political forces demanded presidential elections first,” Egypt’s Interim President Adly Mansour said in a televised address Sunday, “and I have amended the roadmap to meet their demands.”

In that address, Mansour announced that Egypt would hold presidential elections before parliamentary polls, changing a political roadmap laid down after the ouster of Mohamed Morsi on 3 July 2013.

The long-expected change could pave the way for the election of General Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi — the popular defence minister who many expect will run for, and win, the presidency. The roadmap had called for parliamentary elections first, but many of Egypt’s political parties said that holding presidential elections first would give them more time to get ready for parliamentary elections.
