Hamdeen Sabahi, a leftwing politician and journalist, announced earlier this month that he would be running for president in the forthcoming election.

Sabahi, 59, came third in the 2012 presidential election won by Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, who was deposed in July last year following mass protests against his rule. He is currently the leader of the Egyptian Popular Current and a co-leader of the National Salvation Front.

Sabahi built his popularity during his campaign for the 2012 election, using a popular touch to beat candidates with better-funded campaigns.
