A REPLICA of Tutankhamun’s tomb opened to the public today, reports Nevine El-Aref. Located at the entrance of the Valley of the Kings on Luxor’s west bank, close to the rest house of British Egyptologist Howard Carter, the original tomb’s discoverer, the facsimile is intended to protect the original from the attrition caused by sightseers.

The new mud-brick structure contains a full scale replica of the burial chamber which was discovered by Carter in 1922. Work began on the project in 2009 though the concept was first mooted in 1988 when concern over the preservation of ancient royal tombs began to be voiced across the archaeological community. The Factum Foundation of Madrid, the Zurich-based Society of Friends of the Royal Tombs of Egypt and the University of Basel contributed to the project.
