Al-Ahram Weekly

62nd anniversary of the 23 July 1952 Revolution

Free Officers pose before the camera and in the centre is Egypt’s first president Mohamed Naguib upon announcing the end of the monarchy and the ushering in of the republican era and an entirely new political dispensation

Still under threat

“The New Valley terrorist attack, which coincided with the inferno in Gaza, is planned by the international MB organisation to push Egypt into a confrontation at the time when the state is gradually regaining its power. It came a few days after a similar attack in Tunisia... at the time when ISIS is expanding and establishing a caliphate, to warn us that Egypt is still in danger and under threat from various forces.”
Gamal Al-Ghitani, Al-Akhbar

Rereading the situation

“After the ceasefire, Palestinian leaders should re-read the situation in the region. The conflict in Iraq is open, the war in Syria is open, Jordan is worried and Lebanon is on edge. The Palestinian file has become one of many in a region that is engaged with enemies from inside rather than from out.”
Ghassan Sharbal, Al-Hayat

40,000 students enrolled in one day

“On the first day of registration, some 40,000 students enrolled in various universities via the registration office. Nearly 100,000 students have the right to enroll in the first phase of registration.”

Egyptian Essence: $1bn

The cost of building the Aswan Dam on the Nile River. It was completed in 1970.

“Israeli soldier arresting a Palestinian child then hitting him. This video made me extremely angry and very anxious. I know if I speak what’s on my mind I will regret it in the future. All I’m going to say is please guys, please share.”
Sahar Aziz

“These people have no hearts.
To everyone who says Israel targets resistance only, or kids are killed because Hamas hides behind civilians. Do you know what’s in this image. This is what Israel’s military and tanks shoot all over Gaza. Spinning nails and shells that fly over Gaza. I used to find different types of nails and shells shot from tanks in my house in Gaza. My aunt was hit in the head while she was showering by one of these. Israel is not entering Gaza just to kill Hamas. Wake up people. Do not be fooled.”

Wonder if #MB/Anti-Coup Alliance will condemn the killing of the soldiers in Wadi el-Gedid - or suggest false flag operation. #Egypt

Basil @basildabh
Egypt has a worsening western border situation: 15 soldiers killed in Al-Wadi Al-Gedid.

Weddady @weddady
My take: Bombing Gaza doesn’t work. Didn’t in 08, didn’t in 2012.. Not going to work now.

Jon Snow @jonsnowC4
Were any other country on Earth doing what is being done in Gaza, there would be worldwide uproar.
