Al-Muizz restored

ON TUESDAY evening Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb, Minister of Antiquities Mamdouh Eldamaty and the governor of Cairo, Galal Al-Said, were joined by nine other cabinet members for the inauguration of the third, and final phase of the Al-Muizz Street rehabilitation project, reports Nevine El-Aref.

Mohamed Abdel-Aziz, director of the Historic Cairo Rehabilitation Project, told Al-Ahram Weekly that the Ministry of Antiquities had completed the replacement of all street lighting damaged or stolen during the January 2011 Revolution within the allocated budget of LE1,100,000.

The first and second phases of the project were completed three months ago at a cost of LE4,200,000. All encroachment on monuments lining the street has been removed, the façades of shops spruced up, sidewalks repaired and 64 new gates installed as part of the pedestrianisation of the area.

Visitors can now stroll along Al-Muizz Street, admiring the splendour of the Islamic monuments, without being in danger of being knocked down by passing motorcycles.
