The world’s conscience
“Palestinian citizens have been feeling the magnitude of devastation that hit Gaza. Now that the Gaza Reconstruction Conference took place they should also feel there is some improvement, that the world realises the devastation that affected their daily life and made them refugees in their own land. Will the world’s conscience respond to Egypt’s call and move to rebuild Gaza?”
Al-Youm Al-Sabei

Back to school
“The Egyptian university campuses have opened their gates to students for a new academic year full of challenges. The discourse of threats and security measures have reigned, and politics is dismissed because it is seen as the source of trouble at the universities. Meanwhile, at the other end of the spectrum, violence, sabotage and incitement are seen as an alternative political project.”
Amr Al-Shobaki, Al-Masry Al-Youm

Dialogue, yet again
“I wonder about those who call for transforming the universities into military barracks by tightening control on students and banning any political activities in the name of stability, as well as sacking professors and students through administrative rather than legal procedure. These police-state practices will not lead to the desired calm. Calm can only be achieved via opening up dialogue with students. If only officials try dialogue, which I urge them to, I am sure they will win.”
Mohamed Abdel-Quddous, Al-Akhbar

Egyptian Essence: Conditional growth

“The World Bank expects that the growth rate in Egypt can reach 3.1 per cent provided that the political tension is contained. That will pave the way to investment and more job opportunities.”

“In his speech at the Gaza Reconstruction Conference, the Qatar representative underlined the aid that his country had given to Gaza before, pledging another sizeable amount — God knows whether his pledge is genuine or just conference propaganda as usual. But what is the use of financial aid when his country’s political efforts aim to wipe out the Palestinian issue?”
Mohamed Farahat

“We were in confrontation with the Brothers and the Salafis before the 30 June Revolution that aimed to topple those who trade in religion. After the 30 June revolution, we are facing those who trade in religion as well as remnants of the Mubarak regime.”
Mohaned Mustafa Mardan

The various states meeting in Cairo for the #Gaza reconstruction conference should have acted in July & August to stop #Israel’s destruction.

Stanley Cohen @StanleyCohenLaw
All the blood money donated to Gaza reconstruction should be used for children’s cemeteries for the next war crimes.

Bel Trew @Beltrew
We must end the vicious cycle of destruction, reconstruction, violence: the leitmotif in all the #Gaza conference speeches today.

Sonia Dridi @Sonia_Dridi
#Kerry: 3rd time in less than 6 years we’ve been working on reconstruction efforts / don’t think anyone here wants to come again to rebuild #Gaza
