Around the galleries

Woman as the secret of existence and a very rich source of inspiration is the motif behind versatile artist Ibrahim Abdel-Malak's latest exhibition, his ninth on the theme of Woman called "Years of Love 9: Freedom". Currently on display at Picasso gallery in Zamalek, the exhibition showcases 37 bronze sculptures and 47 oil paintings. This exhibition marked the strong comeback of the artist after many years of absence when he was busy writing literary works and articles in the field of art criticism. In his paintings and sculptures, Abdel-Malak is not concentrating on the traditional beauty of woman but rather on her life. He depicted her as a prisoner behind bars who struggles to set herself free from all restrictions imposed on her by society. He endeavoured to reveal this through drawing frames and lines that outline women's faces using light, shadows and subtle shades of colours. His bronze sculpted works are inspired mainly by Egyptian heritage, but in a contemporary vision. He brilliantly embodies Pharaonic, Coptic and Islamic beauty which he emphasises through the use of lines and birds as if they are the crown of beauty.

The exhibition runs until 24 November.
