Getting about

This is a good time of year to visit Upper Egypt and the Western Desert oases. Here is the lowdown on getting from A to B.

PHOTOGRAPHER Farid Atiya captured this diver exploring the reef in the crystal clear water of Mersa Bareka near Ras Mohamed. The Ras Mohamed National Park at the southern tip of Sinai boasts some of the richest and most spectacular diving in the world. Under the park's management philosophy, visitors and dive-boat operators must follow clear environmental rules to minimise their impact on the environment.

Humans put serious stress on such fragile eco- systems as coral reefs, whether from offshore pollution in the form of oil spills and dumped garbage, from harvesting fish and corals or from harmful diving practices. Practices such as dynamiting for fish, shell collecting, and anchoring boats to the reef, though universally outlawed, are sadly still continued. At Ras Mohamed the reefs are protected so that both the marine residents and their human visitors can enjoy the splendours of the reef in their natural state.

The only war that is being waged at Ras Mohamed is against the crown of thorns starfish, which has the potential to decimate corals. An outbreak in the Egyptian Red Sea a few years ago led to measures being set up to counteract the population increase.

Travel to Sinai, as to the rest of Egypt, is regarded as safe and unrestricted, and there are currently many bargains to be found in hotel accommodation, dive courses and dive-boat charters in Sharm El-Sheikh, Hurghada and other resorts.
