DUBAI International Film Festival (6-11 December) was launched on Saturday in a major ceremony at Cairo's Grand Hyatt Hotel, in the presence of Dubai Media City director Abdel-Hamid Juma and several Egyptian stars. A multicultural forum aiming to "build cultural bridges" and to promote Dubai as a cultural as well as economic centre, the event includes 80 films, 55 of which are features; 30 of the films on offer hail from Arab countries. Honoured by way of "a tribute to Egyptian cinema" were filmmaker Dawoud Abdel-Sayed and actor Omar Sharif.
